ABOUT
Biography
For more than half a century, Zeynep Oral has been one of the most respected and influential voices in Turkey's cultural and intellectual life. A journalist, author, theatre critic, public intellectual, and advocate of democracy, women's rights, freedom of expression, and the arts, she has devoted her career to building bridges between culture and society, believing that artistic creativity cannot flourish without freedom, justice, and human dignity.
Born in Istanbul, Oral graduated from the İzmir American Girls' College before studying journalism at the Paris School of Journalism (École Supérieure de Journalisme de Paris). She later pursued theatre studies at the Sorbonne University, experiences that profoundly shaped her international outlook and lifelong engagement with literature and the performing arts.
Throughout her career she has worked as a journalist, editor, theatre critic, columnist, interviewer, and broadcaster. In 1972, she became one of the founding editors of Milliyet Sanat, Turkey's pioneering arts and culture magazine. As its editor-in-chief for nearly thirty years, she transformed the magazine into one of the country's most influential cultural publications, introducing generations of readers across Turkey to literature, theatre, music, cinema, visual arts, and contemporary intellectual debates.
For many years she has also been a columnist for Cumhuriyet, one of Turkey's leading independent newspapers. Her columns move effortlessly between culture and current affairs, exploring how artistic life reflects broader questions of democracy, secularism, human rights, gender equality, peace, and social justice. Throughout decades marked by political upheaval, censorship, and democratic challenges, she has remained a steadfast defender of freedom of thought and expression.
Oral is the author of twenty books encompassing memoir, travel writing, literary journalism, interviews, theatre criticism, biography, and social commentary. Among them, Being a Woman (Kadın Olmak), first published in 1985 and continuously revised over the decades, became a landmark work in Turkey's public discussion of women's rights. Widely read by successive generations, it helped encourage critical thinking about gender equality and inspired many young women to engage with feminist ideas.
Her books also include studies of the legendary opera singer Leyla Gencer, memoirs of remarkable cultural figures, travel narratives from Asia and Latin America, portraits of Anatolian life, and essays on world theatre. Across all these works runs a common thread: a deep curiosity about people, cultures, and the universal struggle for dignity and freedom.
Beyond journalism and literature, Oral has played a pioneering role in Turkish civil society. She is among the founders of the Turkish Association of Theatre Critics, the Nâzım Hikmet Foundation, KA-DER (Association for the Support and Training of Women Candidates), the Turkey–Greece Friendship and Peace Association, the Ana Kültür Foundation, and WINPEACE, the Women's Initiative for Peace between Turkey and Greece. Her commitment to dialogue across borders and cultures has made her an important voice for reconciliation, particularly between Turkey and Greece.
She also served for many years as President of PEN Turkey, representing Turkish writers internationally and defending freedom of expression, imprisoned writers, and the independence of literature in increasingly difficult times.
Her contributions to journalism, literature, theatre, cultural life, and human rights have been recognized with numerous prestigious national and international awards. Among them are France's Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Officier des Palmes Académiques, the Abdi İpekçi Peace and Friendship Award, UNESCO–Greece's Mothers Working for Peace Award, the Press Freedom Dialogue Award of the International Press Institute (IPI), the Catalan PEN Free Voice Award, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IKSV) International Theatre Festival Honor Award, and many lifetime achievement awards recognizing her enduring contribution to Turkish journalism, literature, theatre, and cultural life.
Over the decades, Oral has lectured extensively in Turkey and abroad on literature, theatre, culture, democracy, women's rights, and freedom of expression. She has participated in international conferences, literary festivals, and human rights forums, continuing to advocate for dialogue between cultures and for the indispensable role of the arts in democratic societies.
Throughout her life and work, Zeynep Oral has remained guided by a simple but unwavering conviction: that literature, theatre, music, and all forms of artistic expression are not luxuries but essential ways of defending human dignity, enlarging our capacity for empathy, and imagining a more just and peaceful world.
